The restaurant represents more than just a place to eat; it embodies a philosophy of transparency, customer involvement, and culinary creativity that has made Mongolian barbecue restaurants increasingly popular across the United States and beyond.[3]
The concept behind Hula’s Chinese Bar-B-Q centers on empowering customers to become co-creators of their dining experience. Rather than passively receiving a pre-determined meal, diners at Hula’s navigate through an extensive buffet-style setup featuring an impressive array of fresh, raw ingredients including premium cuts of meat, vibrant vegetables, aromatic noodles, fluffy rice, and an extensive selection of sauces and spices.[3] This build-your-own-bowl approach transforms the dining experience into an interactive culinary adventure where customers can experiment with flavor combinations, dietary preferences, and portion sizes tailored to their individual tastes and nutritional needs. Whether a guest prefers traditional combinations or wishes to venture into bold, unexpected flavor pairings, the possibilities remain virtually limitless.
What sets Hula’s Chinese Bar-B-Q apart from conventional fast-casual dining establishments is the theatrical and engaging cooking process that unfolds right before customers’ eyes. Once diners have assembled their custom bowl of ingredients and selected their preferred sauce combinations, they proceed to the restaurant’s signature large round grill where skilled chefs prepare their meal with precision and flair.[4] This open-kitchen concept eliminates the mystery often associated with food preparation, allowing customers to witness the transformation of their raw ingredients into a perfectly cooked, steaming hot meal in mere minutes. The visible cooking process not only ensures food quality and freshness but also creates an entertainment value that enhances the overall dining experience and builds customer confidence in the restaurant’s culinary standards.
The warm, down-to-earth atmosphere at Hula’s Chinese Bar-B-Q complements its innovative service model perfectly. The restaurant welcomes families, groups of friends, and individual diners alike, creating an inclusive environment where people from all walks of life can gather to enjoy delicious food and meaningful social interaction. This approachable setting contrasts beautifully with the sophistication of the dining concept itself, making Mongolian barbecue accessible to customers who might otherwise find specialized cuisine intimidating or exclusive.
Operating as both a traditional restaurant and a fast-food establishment with takeout options, Hula’s Chinese Bar-B-Q demonstrates remarkable versatility in meeting diverse customer needs and preferences. Whether patrons seek a leisurely dine-in experience, a quick lunch break, or convenient takeout for busy evenings, the restaurant accommodates all scenarios. Brian D was our server! He was very personable and very efficient, anticipating our needs. The comment at our table was that he was such an excellent server he would do well in a very upscale restaurant. The cooks were also very good and personable!

Used to be a good place. Good flavor- of course you build your own so yeah. Sometimes it's like playing three card Monte. Keep an eye on your bowl LOL because some people behind the counter are not very sharp. An example of this is I built the perfect bowl, work my way through the line, and it was handed over and they cooked it, I'm assuming perfectly. Then proceeded to give it away to someone in ahead of me. So, to say mistakes happen is a fair statement. And also they're not too sharp is a fair statement. I hope whoever got my dinner enjoyed my creation lol

Came in just after they opened and it was the best time to go! Ive Been coming to Hulas for 20 years now and its always been consistently exceptional. I came into a very clean and organized restaurant. No food on the ground in the grill area or bowl making line and tables were shiny. Price is arguably standard for what you get. Rarely do I eat the whole bowl so I get 2 meals out of it.

First time in 30 years I've been disappointed by hulas. My noodles were pale and simultaneously burnt in spots. It tastes like butter noodles and freezer burnt meat. I've never left my leftovers let alone a full bowl. I waited in line for over a hour, just to be dissapointed. I know it's a very busy night but I've seen it busier and go twice as fast. Now I have to get dinner somewhere else and I'm out $64 not including tip for two people. I think the grill has been turned down so they can pay only one cook at a time, which makes the food more boiled than fried, killing the flavor and caramelization. Truly deeply disappointed please do better hulas, you are a Chico institution, but I wouldn't pay $10 for what I got tonight.

Excited I went because I had a spot like this in my county years ago and it shut down because the mall area is was in was changing. It was excited as it was literally the same concept. The buffet line had all the frozen meats and fresh veggies that you pile in a bowl, you add sauces and then at the end of the line they cook it over a huge round hot plate. They cook it for about 5min and then hand it back to you. There's no wayThere's no way it seems.$24 for pretty much all you can eat. Great location for an fun experience.
